In this all level workshop led by local artist Shizu Homma, participants will spend a morning dancing on site at Glen Foerd. There will be vigorous physical warm up, subtle sensory-movement-awareness exercises, and improvisational approaches. In response to the unique outdoor spaces at the estate, we will consider impetus, observation, composition and space/time in making spontaneous choreography.
Wear comfortable clothes that you can move in, sneakers or athletic shoes, and bring a small notebook and something to write with if you are inclined to take notes or jot things down. This class is great for anybody with a curiosity to dance with trees, rocks, buildings, ground, sky, horizon, wind, light, shade, and more.
Shizu Homma has performed for modern and butoh dance artists since 1997, and has been choreographing since 2002. She has taught and shared butoh dance to teenagers, college students, and adults, including seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Most recently she created virtual performances for AUNTS is Dance, and BAAD! (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance). She is currently working with choreographer Sari Nordman.
