On April 8th, parts of Pennsylvania will experience a total eclipse of the sun. The moon will begin eclipsing the Sun at around 2:08 p.m., and anyone is welcome to use our grounds as a viewing site.
We will be hosting an activity from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., during which we will give a short talk about eclipses and lead visitors in crafting their own indirect viewers. These viewers are made from boxes (roughly the size of a shoebox), Pringle cans, or similar materials. (Please bring your own boxes and Pringle cans for this craft.) They are designed to project the shadow of the eclipse onto a viewing surface and are not meant to view the eclipse directly.
The only safe way to view the eclipse directly is with glasses that follow the ISO 12312-2 international standard. We will not have approved glasses for all but may have a small number to share among viewers. If you would like to visit just for the eclipse, feel free to arrive anytime during the eclipse from 2:08 to 4:30 p.m.
Please remember to bring any items you may need for your own comfort and safety. This includes approved viewing glasses, chairs, blankets, sunscreen, snacks, water, etc. If you have any further questions, please email or call our Environmental Program Manager, Rob DiTomasso, at rditomasso@glenfoerd.org or 215-632-5330 x14
