Join us at Holy Family University for our Speaker Series featuring Professor Domenic Vitiello and his book The Sanctuary City.
Philadelphia and its suburbs have played a prominent part in the history of sanctuary and debates over immigration in the twenty-first century and at other key points in the nation's past. This discussion and presentation will explore: 1) what sanctuary and sanctuary cities mean; and 2) the history of sanctuary movements in Philadelphia and its suburbs since the 1980s. The talk is based on Prof. Vitiello's book, The Sanctuary City, which traces what sanctuary has meant for Central American, Southeast Asian, West African, Arab, and Mexican immigrants and refugees and the receiving communities where they settled in Greater Philadelphia since the 1970s. The book is free to download on Amazon Kindle or as an e-book or pdf from Cornell University Press.
This lecture will take place in the Education and Technology Center Auditorium of Holy Family University (9801 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19114). The event is free and open to the public.
The lecture is part of the Glen Foerd-Holy Family University Speaker Series that showcases topics of area cultural and historical interest. All lectures are free and open to the public. Copies of Vigilance will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
